In January ‘26 I’m off to Sri Lanka for wildlife photography. As you are probably more than aware ‘I take my own wildlife reference for my tattoos.’ So! With that being said I’m looking for clients who would like to get a wildlife tattoo of an animal or bird that I could ideally get photos of while I’m out there. In this video I’m using images I took in Asia previously but most of these birds/animals are found all across the Indian subcontinent to give some illustration to my idea. My Shetland trip back in June this year Was supposed to be the start of a bigger YouTube project documenting my process of client-photography-tattoo process as the beginning of a whole series of videos. It didn’t go exactly to plan as this clip explains. What happened on that trip completely derailed me for months. I lost the motivation to complete this and start anything new. Getting back into the wildlife filming and photography the last few weeks has finally stirred something again and this is the direction I’m looking to take my tattooing. Not that I’ll be shying away from portraits at all but I’m looking for more clients who want something completely bespoke and wildlife related. I’ll also be pushing the documentary style recording of each process and this video is to hold me to account. We are where are and have the cards we’ve been dealt. There won’t be a perfect time to begin anything new and meaningful. I’d like to thank @quanpablo79 for his help in the whole initial process and @sheila_johnson_tattoo for her immediate assistance in Shetland when shit hit the fan. Anyway, I still have the bare bones of that to work with. In the meantime my client, David, requested a red deer stag as he had seen that take my own wildlife reference photos. So it was the perfect opportunity to get back on the horse, or in this instance, a deer. I went to bushy park in London 2 weeks ago. This is the process captured from start to finish. Episode 3! Nightingales… or not? Man these things take a long time to put together! So I went a few times trying to get some good reference shots of Nightingales. It’s always going to be a challenge; A) they’re reeeeally rare now where I live. B) they like to sing from cover. C) you’ve got a small window in spring each year and D) early mornings are best. AND I don’t want to disturb these guys just for photos so I keep my distance. But what I’ve found is that some of the most useful tattoo reference has come from other subjects when I’m looking for something else and I’ve even noticed that filing in 4K allows to take screen grabs of positions of a subject I prefer. As is what happened with the blackcap tattoo. So, one of the most popular bird tattoos in the UK is the European Robin. In this lil vid I give you a behinds the scenes look at how I go about getting my reference photos. What should be an easy one is perhaps easier to find closer to home. The only downside being the lack of different settings. It’s a bird that I definitely needed to gather more images of. My local ‘patch’ in this clip is Old Hamble Airfield and is currently under serious threat of destruction due to the creation of a gravel extraction quarry by a multi national corporation. It’s being fought hard against by my local community. So, after many months, years even, of procrastinating (avoiding), I decided to channel my inner @backshall.steve and start documenting my process of traveling and collecting wildlife images to use for tattoo references. I took the photo of this waxwing I tattooed on Mike, less than a week ago. I love it when I get to use my own wildlife photography for tattoo reference. Pretty much whenever I do wildlife tattoos, if I have the photographs myself, I’ll always use my own reference where possible. That way I can ensure that a client of mine will always have something unique. Swipe to see the wider context, the reference photo and a healed hawk owl on the lower part.
